Three rules behind every good font pairing
Contrast the structure, not just the style
A serif heading over a sans body (or the reverse) is the most reliable pairing because the eye can tell instantly which text is which. Within one group, pair different constructions: a geometric sans like Jost with a humanist sans like Open Sans.
Match the proportions
Fonts with similar x-heights sit comfortably together, even when their styles differ. Very low x-height display faces (Josefin Sans, Cormorant) need a body font with a moderate x-height so paragraphs don’t look shrunken next to them.
Give each font one job
Headings can be expressive; body text should be quiet and built for reading. That’s why the generator never offers scripts, display faces or inscriptional capitals as body fonts.

Questions people ask
What makes two fonts pair well?
Contrast with a shared logic. Pair fonts that differ clearly in structure (a serif with a sans, a geometric with a humanist) but have compatible proportions such as similar x-height. Avoid two fonts that are similar but not identical: they look like a mistake.
How many fonts should a website use?
Usually two: one for headings and one for body text. A single family in several weights also works well. Three is the practical maximum before a page starts to look noisy.
Are these font pairings free for commercial use?
Yes. Every font in the generator is from Google Fonts and licensed under the SIL Open Font License or Apache License, which allow commercial use.
How does the font pairing generator choose?
The shuffle uses typographic rules: it favours contrast of classification, penalises near-duplicates and only uses faces suitable for paragraphs as body text. The AI option reads your project description and chooses from the same curated list.
Can I save my favourite pairings?
Yes. Saved pairings are kept in your browser’s local storage, so they stay on this device and you can clear them at any time.
